「和文英訳の修行」と「基本英文700選」の類似例文

佐々木高政著の「和文英訳の修行」と鈴木長十・伊藤和夫共著の「基本英文700選」には類似例文がある。対応を表にしてまとめた。

英語の構文を学習するために鈴木長十・伊藤和夫著の「基本英文700選」を使ってきたが (1周目，2周目，3周目，4周目，5周目，6周目)，つい先日，この本が別の本の「類似本」であることを知った。日本語文と英語文の対で例文をあげていくスタイルで最初に出版されたのは，佐々木高政著「和文英訳の修業」だというのだ。

現在入手できるのは「4訂新版」で 1981 年発行のものである。初版はなんと 1952 (昭和27) 年の発行となっている。

この本の「予備編」には 500 組の日本語文と英文の組が載っていて，まずはこれを暗記せよと言う。眺めてみると，基本英文と同じ文があるのに気がついた。「基本英文700選」の初版の発行は 1968 年であるから，「修行」の一部をコピペして使っている可能性がある。しかし，「修行」の「1981年4訂新版」のはしがきには，250 個の暗唱用文例の入れ替えを行ったと書いてあるから，もうどちらがどちらをコピペしているのか分からなくなっている。

このリストは1か月くらいかけて地道に作っていたのだが，出来上がった表は思ったよりもなんだかスゲくなってしまった。類似例文は全部で 37 個ある。割合にして約 5 パーセント。これを多いとみるか少ないとみるかは意見が分かれるだろう。「和文英訳の修行」の例文は，不幸だったり不吉だったり，ネガティブなイメージのものが多い。「第474番の気味が悪いほどの気違い率」などがそれである。
